Ully D Putri

Ully is a lecturer at the English Department, University of Indonesia. Prior to working as a lecturer, she was a journalist with a vast experience in the mass media. She started her career as a junior reporter for an entertainment tabloid before she moved to Female magazine. She was soon promoted to be the managing editor at the age of twenty-two and she ran the magazine for a year before she accepted a job offer from Seventeen, a U.S franchise teen magazine, owned by Femina Group.

After working for the magazine for two years, she was ready for a change. She wanted to work for a magazine that focused on social issues, so she took the offer to be the managing editor of Reader’s Digest Indonesia (RDI). While working for RDI she pursued a Master’s Degree in American Studies at University of Indonesia. Her professor took an interest in her thesis and her academic performance, and offered her to work as an assistant lecturer. She left her career in the media and began to emerge herself in the academic life.

In 2009 she received Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Doctoral study in Communications at the University of Colorado, Boulder where she developed her interest in gender, health and HIV/AIDS issues. She has been actively involved as a volunteer for Boulder County AIDS Project (BCAP) since 2010, and she has written papers on HIV/AIDS, gender and moral issues in the media, which have been accepted and presented in numerous international conferences, including the AIDS Conference in Washington D.C in 2012.

She currently lives in Boulder, Colorado, where she teaches undergraduate classes in Contemporary Media Analysis and Media Law, while writing her dissertation on gender, religion, and the discourse production of HIV/AIDS in Indonesia.

This is my simple religion. There is no need for temples; no need for complicated philosophy. Our own brain, our own heart is our temple; the philosophy is kindness.” – Dalai Lama
